The Amgen Foundation is deeply committed to reimagining and expanding access to science education. As Amgen’s principal channel for corporate philanthropy, the Foundation works with expert partners to provide best-in-class science education programs free of cost to teachers and students with the goal of advancing science literacy and inspiring the next generation of innovators.
Since 1991, the Amgen Foundation has contributed more than $450 million to nonprofit organisations across the globe, including $270 million to science education. In 2023, Amgen Foundation programs reached over 25 million students and educators worldwide. Learn more at amgenfoundation.org
The Amgen Foundation works to broaden access to engaging and inspiring science education programs, providing future generations with essential skills to thrive in an increasingly complex world. Together with our partners, we offer hands-on and virtual learning opportunities to ensure that everyone, everywhere can participate in science, regardless of race, ethnicity, income, gender, geography, sexual orientation or disability.
Do you see those eyes?
The focus they bear.
The curiosity they hold.
They’re the scientists of tomorrow.
These students are learning hands-on, in-person and online through the Amgen Foundation and the programs it supports.
It’s an ambitious and thriving endeavor that has brought science education to tens of millions of students around the world.
We provide a borderless, science education infrastructure to foster the next generation of scientists and problem solvers, who can change the world for the better, wherever they live.
Our programs provide students from a diversity of environments, cultures, disciplines and perspectives with unmatched access to transformational science education. It’s an increasingly complex world and what they learn today, they’ll take with them to countries all over the globe tomorrow.
From remote villages to thriving cities, these future problem solvers and change makers will bring solutions to some of humanity’s greatest challenges: deadly diseases, food scarcity, climate change, health inequities.
We know and you know.
Everyone needs science and science needs everyone.
Amgen Foundation. Inspiring the scientists of tomorrow.
Established in 1990, the Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE) is an innovative science education program that introduces secondary school/high school students to the excitement of scientific discovery and builds bridges between school and real-life biosciences. The program provides teachers with professional development and education materials and loans research-grade equipment to high schools all at no cost. Worldwide, the program has reached almost a million students to date.
In October 2023 it was announced that the Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE) program would expand to Brazil, Mexico and South Africa to reach an additional 180,000 students across diverse communities over the next two years. This has been made possible by additional funding of $12.4 million from the Amgen Foundation, bringing its total commitment to the program to over $50 million since 1990.
Australian students have been able to participate in the Amgen Biotech experience since 2017. Thanks to a partnership with The University of Sydney, more than 11,300 students from over 53 schools in New South Wales have already accessed the program’s unique curriculum and resources. Through local stewardship, an increasing number of underprivileged schools across Sydney and regional areas will also benefit from the program in the years to come.

Established in 2006, the Amgen Scholars Program is an undergraduate summer research experience hosted at 24 premier educational and research institutions across the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia and Canada. Participants benefit by conducting a research project under top faculty, participating in seminars and events and taking part in a symposium in their respective region. Throughout the program, participants meet peers, present their research findings, learn about biotechnology and hear from leading scientists. Financial support for students is a critical component of the program, which helps ensure that eligible students, regardless of income, can participate.
The University of Melbourne joined the network of research institutions in 2018, receiving a grant to make the program more accessible across Australia, New Zealand, and Oceania. Through this partnership, over 35 local research leaders signed-on to mentor aspiring scientists, creating dedicated research placements in Melbourne’s Biomedical Precinct each year.
These eight-week placements are designed to increase learning and networking opportunities for students committed to pursuing science or engineering careers. Amgen Scholars learn to collaborate effectively in research settings while investigating areas of research interest within a specific discipline.
